Gonda Tragedy: BJP’s Karan Bhushan Singh’s Convoy Kills 2
2 min readA tragic accident unfolded in Gonda involving the convoy of BJP candidate Karan Bhushan Singh. The convoy collided with a motorcycle, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuring one. The incident, which occurred near Baikunth Degree College on Colonelganj-Huzoorpur road, involved a speeding Toyota Fortuner SUV from Singh’s convoy hitting a bike carrying two young men. Medical personnel pronounced both victims, Rehan Khan, 19, and his cousin Shehzad Khan, 24, dead at the scene. Additionally, bystanders rushed a 60-year-old pedestrian, Sita Devi, to a nearby hospital for treatment of serious injuries.
The Accident
In the immediate aftermath, chaos ensued as locals gathered at the accident site, demanding justice for the victims. Tension escalated when the police attempted to take the bodies for postmortem, leading to a scuffle between the crowd and the authorities. Despite the chaos, the police eventually managed to seize the vehicle and detain the driver, identified as Luvkush Srivastava.
The local police have registered an FIR based on the complaint lodged by the victims’ relatives. However, the FIR does not mention Karan Bhushan Singh, as it is not confirmed whether he was present at the time of the accident. The vehicle involved belongs to Nandini Nagar Educational Institute, an institution run by the Singh family.
The incident’s political ramifications are clearly evident, as opposition parties draw stark parallels to the infamous Lakhimpur Kheri incident. Here, Union Minister Ajay Mishra Teni’s son was involved in a similar accident, prompting the opposition to accuse the BJP of treating citizens as dispensable. Consequently, they have called for stringent action against those responsible.
Karan Bhushan Singh, a national player in double trap shooting, is contesting an election for the first time. Despite the controversy surrounding his father, Brij Bhushan Singh, who faces charges of sexual harassment from female wrestlers, the BJP has nominated Karan as the candidate for the Kaiserganj constituency. Nevertheless, Karan remains resolute in his bid for political office.
The tragedy has highlighted road safety issues in the region, prompting calls for stricter regulations on political convoys. The BJP expressed condolences to the victims’ families and pledged support for the ongoing investigation.
